Hey lisux, there is a video tutorial on creating fog in the compositor here…
http://www.vislab.usyd.edu.au/sidefx/houdini_video/by_topic/compositing/index.html [vislab.usyd.edu.au]
Basically, don't bother with z-depth. Instead go to the deep rasters page of mantra and use P. This will embed the floating point depth data in your .pic file which the Fog COP will use. That sounds about right at least, been a while since I tried it.

1) What do you mean by advanced?
2) Yeah, it's plenty of fun.
3) Houdini can read igs files.
4) It sounds like you're mostly intersted in modeling mechanical objects. For that type of work I prefer to use NURBS, and for NURBS I use Rhino. Houdini has them too, but I prefer Rhino because it is more robust in that department, since that's all it was designed to do, whereas Houdini does a million other things.

Problem solved!
Thanks a million. Also the bug with the previous build, where files would corrupt with shaders in the scene, appears to be gone.

Thank you Steven. I can't do it right now, but I'll try it later and let you know how it went.
Thanks again.

Hi, I have some problems with my installation of Houdini. I was using Apprentice 6.0.249 and it was working ok, but when I installed build .286 the license manager got messed up. It reports version 4x for some reason and says I need to upgrade to a newer version, but of course the only Houdini I had on this machine was Apprentice 6. It's the same problem as this person was having…

So my question is, where do I uninstall Houdini in Irix so I can start fresh? It doesn't show up in the Software Manager or the Remove Product gui, there must be another way to uninstall it. :?
Thanks in advance.

Also, if you want render regions in your renders as opposed to viewport, you can play with the Crop settings in the camera object.

Sorry I can't really be of any help, I just wanted to say that I've also experienced that weird marqee selection thing when clicking and dragging. What I do is immediatly save, because when I hit escape, Houdini crashes. Luckily it only happens every once in a while.
My setup is similar to yours, Win2k/GeForce2, currently running build .249 I believe.

Heh, I'm almost CERTAIN there will be Bevel SOP in 6.5. I mean, there's gotta be with all the bitching and begging we've been doing.
Houdini Lounge » Question about Poly modelling in Houdini

I've never used XSI, but Houdini's poly-modeling abilities are very nice. It lacks some things such as select by edge loop or a bevel tool but otherwise it's very solid. Truth be told, proceduralism is not a huge deal in organic modeling (although it comes in handy sometimes). I don't really model with the network in mind, I just model how I'm used to, works fine.
One thing that I like a lot better than modeling in max is the viewport rotation (as in zoom/rotate/pan). At first it seemed unintuitive compared to max's euler style rotation because it's a bit harder to control, but once you get the hang of it, going back just feels too restrictive, as if you can't get a clear view of your model.
Anyways, I would definitly recommend giving Houdini's poly tools a shot and deciding for yourself which you're more comfortable with.

Houdini4 had OP specific demo files, but AFAIK there are none for newer versions. However if you want to know how the app works there are tons of video tutorials available that will give you some good insight.

You can also use the ShadingLayer VOP to import your model's UV coords. I had the same prob as David, and after a little trial and error I found that this VOP did the trick. Is there any big difference between one method or the other?

MatrixNAN, are you using the drivers that came with your video card? If so you could try upgrading to newer Detonator drivers, should give you a good boost.
btw I'm using a GeForce2 at 1600x1200 32bit colors with no problems in Houdini (on win2k pro), your card should be able to handle 1280x1024 easily.

Hi, I installed Apprentice 6.0.265 on an Octane a couple of days ago and have been doing a little bit of modeling. It seems that when I add a shader sop to the model, and give it a shader, the hip files become corrupt. Meaning when I run Houdini the next time and try to open the file again, I receive a fatal error and Houdini closes. So far it appears that this only happens when I apply shaders to a model. Is this a known bug, and is anyone else having this issue?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yeah, I saw that, really awesome.
I'm guessing Houdini was used for the Agent Smith replicating scene with the metallic goo. Anywhere else?

No doubt VOPs is the more powerful solution, and in your case it proved to be more efficient, but it is just a lot harder to get the hang of if you ask me. I don't feel that comfortable with it, but I'm still a VOPs novice, maybe that's why. Even so, it takes a lot of steps to accomplish something that could be done in seconds in max.

Wow, I have to agree with Wren, he summed it up nicely. The program is getting to the point where it's easy for regular artists to pick up, and they are adding a lot of “convenience” features that have been lacking in the past. Like he said, Houdini still lacks a nice solution for creating materials quickly and easily. Yes VOPs is great and all that, but I wish there was something like Max's material editor: Fast, straight-forward, and relatively powerful.

I'll have to disagree, NURBS still have their place. Many objects are quicker or more accurately modeled with NURBS IMO.
For example, I've seen lots of nice car models done in polys/subd, but they can never match the preciseness of a NURBS model.
I use both though, NURBS for non-organics, and polys for organics.
