So far, Ati cards under OS X have had fewer problems with Houdini than nVidia cards, but it all works.
I think the reason you didn't get any responses at first is that the system requirements page shows the mac requirements, but no worries! Have fun with Houdini!

Maybe they are just hidden? Try pressing the H to home in on the nodes.
If that doesn't work, post the file here on the forums.

I don't think they chose ati. I think Ati took the initiative that nVidia didn't to polish their os x drivers. That's why the cheapest card on the 2008 mac pros far outperformed the nvida cards with core-image, core-video apps.
Perhaps that's what's taking so long for Apple to get back to sidefx, because they're working with nvida, and it's taking them a while.
Just my suppositions, that's all.

I find it ironic that on the mac, ati cards seem to have the least problems, while nvidia are “the” cards to get for windows/linux. Just fruits of the better relationship between Ati and Apple in developing drivers, I guess.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Mike! That's what makes SESI so great, and (one reason) why we tell people to use Houdini.

Thanks for the heads up, and the hard work!
BTW, by good release, do you mean just the next OS X daily build set apart as ‘Production Build’, or when all builds are considered ‘Production Build’?

With OS X 10.6 coming out this Friday, are there incompatibilities with Houdini that would prevent us from upgrading?

Yeah, it's a known issue they're working on. Kind of a bummer, I know, but at least it's on the radar.

Houdini runs great on OS X. If you've got the time, watch the Apple Store refurbished section. Yesterday, there were some of the previous generation unibody MacBook Pros going for around $1300, but they go fast.

Yes! Being able to learn from the scene files is one of Houdini's strengths, and having the scenes from the demos available would be fantastic.

I figured it out. For some reason, Houdini has stopped putting the asterik (*) in the ‘Affected’ and ‘Affector’ fields of the AutoDopNetwork with anything to do with fire.
So, if anyone has this issue, particularly on OS X, put the astericks in those two fields. Not sure why it stopped doing this, but oh well.

I'm on OS X, and I'm playing around with the Burst Into Flame from the shelf, and when I setup a simple scene with a sphere, Houdini shows it's cooking, but I can't see anything.
There are two errors that (sometimes) exist, without me doing anything but creating the sphere, and applying the Burst Into Flame: In the AutoDopNetwork node, the burnsolver node says it's missing the temperature attribute, and the sphere_object1_flamesource_source has the ‘affected’ and ‘affecter’ blank.
What is supposed to go into the affected/affector fields, and where do I find the temperature parameter to activate it? I've gotten this to work in the past, but I'm not sure why it's not working now. These errors appear and disappear, but either way, I still cant see the blue or yellow in the viewport, even though they're in the Network view.
BTW, thanks for the congratulations from everyone, and to SideFX for the Houdini license!

I have an older GeForce 7300, and Houdini works pretty well for me. The GeForce/Quadro cards would indeed be better for Houdini, though the Quadro is only really necessary if you have lots of massive textures on dense models.
Barefeats.com has some benchmarks, using games, and the nVidia cards are faster for OpenGL games and apps (like Houdini), but the Radeon's are better overall for Macs, as they are significantly faster doing Core Image, Core Video, and Core Animation.

I would get the GeForce 8800, or Radeon 3870 if you use Final Cut Studio a ton, as they should be more than capable for working with Houdini, or other 3D Apps under OS X. Quadro is overkill in most cases. If you're going to be working under Windows, find any GeForce or Quadro you want to use, and use it. It's only under OS X that you're limited in which cards have OS X drivers.
Hope that helps!

Fantastic! If you could post the hip file, that would be awesome. BTW, how long did the render take? What kind of hardware did you use? Was it a voxel simulation, or particles (or both)?
Kudos!

Within a couple of days of playing around in the interface, reading the manuals, and watching some video tutorials, I could understand the basics of Houdini.
I would recommend watching the 3dbuzz.com Houdini tutorials, as well as the tutorials on the apprentice blog (http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=129&Itemid=241) [sidefx.com] and under the learning tab here at sidefx.com.
Houdini wasn't too hard to figure out the fundamentals (for the most part), though it's true that there is a lot of depth to the program, like most, that take time to really master.

I'm pretty new, but with what I've dabbled, there are some killer interface options that make Houdini a sleeping giant for character animation. You can setup the interface with the parameters pane, table view, spline editor, and you're ready to go; I really like how intuitive it is.
