Hello, I am trying to add a gobo to my key light in Houdini. In photography all you have to do is just put gobo in front of the light, and the gobo is projected. When I look in Houdini the closest to that I've seen the projection Map on a spot light. What kind of light do I need to be able to project a gobo onto my scene?

Start off by creating a spotlight then assign a gobo texture to the Projection Map field. The light type will default to Point. Go ahead and dial in your spotlight cone options. To obtain soft shadows change the light type to Grid, this make the light an Area Light. Lower the Area Size to soften the shadows to match the shadow edge in the gobo texture.

Here is an example of the above technique.
