I appreciate the insight.
On the subject of submitting files to support I've found that submitting production files is often counter productive. There is simply too much noise in there that could be obfuscating the problem. I've had better success rate getting my issues looked at by submitting small concise hips that demonstrate the issue clearly.
There is also no reason why you can't bake your geometry into a caches within the same hip (we can and do encourage our artists to do that) We use an a_ prefix for assets, r_ for ready to render cached objects, etc.
Just because it's in one file it necessarily follow that it needs to be mess.
What does follow is that context switching has a cost... Small as it is. If I needed to manipulate 4 files to update a model, shader binding, a particle cache, and some AOVs, it would take me longer then if it all lived in one place (Rez configurable envs nothwithstanding).
I can also appreciate how this workflow wouldn't be effective with a larger team - which is not the case with us. We just need to go fast, and this path - for us - is as fast as we can go.
That's what I learned over the last 23 years at this.

tamteSygnumbased on historical data its still too soon even for the sneak peek videos so overdue feeling may be just subjective
Jeez. Why can`t they simply make an H19 announcement already??? It`s overdue, man! The tension is unbearable now!
Not complaining, but curious: is this the first time that the production cycle takes 2 years?
Houdini 18.0 was released in Nov 2019

Coming from another well know 3D application where the yearly subscription model pretty much meant some nice new icons one year, I’ve been pretty amazed at the pace and scale of the development over the past few years, global pandemic aside!
But yeah the lure of shiny and new is strong :-)

18.5 came out 10 months ago, seems pretty consistent with other release dates!

For H20 Can we please have the UI from H8 back (but maybe not adjust the pricing to 2005 level)?

osongd3dworldsrsly, this again?
an easy mode to learn would be great
The best thing would be to just let machines do everything for us. Then we don't have to do anything, just observe.
Joking aside, I think there was never a better time to jump into Houdini. SideFX really did a lot with H18, 18.5 to make things much easier without being forced into Vex. It was my 3rd time trying out Houdini, difference is this time I stuck to it and never looked back. 5 months of learning every day produced great results. But, to be able to learn it you need put time into it, nothing comes overnight.

oh man I remember with every new version of Cinema4D we kept waiting for the "make it pretty" button. which never happened.
I haven't fired up Houdini in some time. I've been learning to draw with paper and pencil, I've done some doodling in the past but nothing serious, so I will get that down and get back into Houdini. I will retire 3 or so months into next year, I'll be 65 first of the year and be able to do art/3D full time afterwards. it will be a new experience not living by an alarm or time clock after about 48 years of doing so.
