Hi there folks! There's now a new tutorial series up on the site called Introduction to Fluid Dynamics in Houdini [sidefx.com]. This crash course series focuses on the concept of fluid dynamics and how they work within Houdini. This 2 hour 48 minute long collection of 15 Fluid Dynamics Tutorials contains both the basics on working with Voxels and working with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics that should help even the neophyte get up and running.

Enjoy!

Most excellent!

I have to admit, you (SESI), have been doing a great job recently with the tutorials and documentation. Such a turn around from the previous Houdini eras.

Keep up the great work.

any chance we can get something like the for mantra….and vector operations focused on mantra…so we could really use mantra in the same way people use mental ray and vray?

I am really stunned by the quality of learning materials…but sometimes it would be great to get back to basics…

like a primer for the mantra renderer and insights on how it works and why.

from rendering basics , to optimization, to special applications, to emulation case studies(making mantra act like mental ray, vray, prman, etc.)

and then do the same with material exploration and development…

short movies showing use how to make different materials from basic to advanced….so we could show off some more…

that would be so cool…to understand mantra like I did back in 2.0 dayz  ….or more….

it would also convince so many people to pick up houdini.

I'm glad you all appreciate these! Sorry for the Toronto, traffic ambiance

I hope to eventually do some more tutorials (on a variety of subjects), but please understand that these particular tutorials were done in my spare time at home so I cannot promise any sort of an E.T.A. on new material.

Thanks to this new tutorials we can discover a new powerfull tool like fluids in houdini are, but in a more specific and cleaner way.

bye bye FumeFX!!!

Thank you very much.

it would be really great to have people who have used FumeFX give their thoughts on replicating the same kinds of results with Houdini's fluids…

Yes, thanks a lot this info is very very useful.

I've always been amused by SESI, you guys have the best learning edition there is, I still remember when the first learning edition came out, you guys give away a WHOLE CD full of video tutorials, I still have those and watch them still for reference, I've even tough of making those tutorials up to date, cause there's a bunch of nice topics. those videos still work even with 9.5 but what I found out is that sometimes you do less steps now .

well, I'm very thankful for all that's happening in the industry now, and we are gonna totally change the studio to a Houdini pipeline as soon as we can.

thanks again to everyone at SESI for keeping 3D FUN!!

maybe we also could redo some old school tutorials,
like the ones posted on

http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?categoryid=13&subcategoryid=145 [3dlinks.com]

Some of them are still very cool (I love Audrey, it was my first project done in Houdini). The rocket tutorial or the roller coaster ride where also very cool!
Unfortunately I can't find them anymore with source files and so on…

However I agree that the most needed are tutorials addressing Mantra.

I too think the tutorials are great!

For the Dough Cutter, I could not find the example file anywhere in the Houdini 9.5.177 installation.

I'd recommend putting any required files on the same page as the tutorial video downloads as some may not be familiar with finding the examples in Houdini, or in my case, can't find them

EDIT: Oh nevermind, it's shown as the very last thing in the video And isn't named Cookie or Dough…

Cheers,

I have just watched these videos and they are a very useful introduction to the Fluids, well done SESI.

I'd like to add a tip, though: the bit about the vorticles - I find an effective way to work with vorticles is to visualize the velocity field as streamers and playing forward a few frames. Currently there is no other way to visualize the vorticles' radii (something which I hope SESI do add some day) and you need to do this in order to visualize this. You should see the whorls/whirls in the streamers, especially if you temporarily amplify their force magnitude for the sake of visualization.

In your vorticle example in the video, the reason why they seem to have no real effect is because you increase their radii to 1 and due to their axes being random and radii overlapping so much they very effectively nullify each other's effects and nothing happens.

Cheers,
Jason
