Both packages have roughly the same learning curve I think. (if you already know one package the learning curve for a new one is steeper for some reason.)
Another thing Houdini doesn't hide as much as the technical underworkings as Maya does, which IMHO is a good thing because you'll learn some of the technical parts just because they are there.
Plus there is nothing better than an artist who can fix their own small technical problems
