Just thinking out loud here
If you paid 237.00/year thats just over eight years to afford Houdini escape.
It's something like 34 years to afford Houdini Master.
Like you I can't help but thinking wouldn't it be great If I could apply this to
the purchase of a master license,
but then I look at the above and think well I'm getting an awesome deal.
Sooner or later the Job will come along and help pay for it.

-File centric-
A quick way to get what you might want is
to open Houdini and immediately save the file into
a directory….like My “Best Project Ever”.
From that point your $HIP folder is “Best Project Ever”
and everything you need is put in that folder, Geo, images, textures or
whatever.
-Job Centric-
The other way is to be job centric and create the $JOB variable on your system and then that becomes where Houdini goes to look for thing first.
It is a little hard at first to wrap your head around,
but in the big picture it is flexible enough to setup any way you would want.
My personal method is the first, as its just me at home doing my own thing
and its real easy to use that way.
If you are at a studio, or have multiple people on a project you will need something more like the JOB centric way.

enable open GL makes a hugh difference as a ton of draw and display
functions use it.
The other thing (at least to me ) is the graphics card itself. If you not on a “nvidia” or “ATI” it might be suspect. Technically any card capable of
running OpenGL should work but…..
As for the Python error which version of Python do you have installed?
You should probably have 2.3 or 2.4 installed.
Hope this was of some help.

How about a suite of shelf tools that cover Sprite rendering?
I see a lot of posts trying to get sprites right for rendering.
I think this would be great. I loath having to setup sprites every time I need them. Plus I always seem to do it wrong the first go round. I would like to see how SESI sets things up for sprites.
-Lyn-
Oh almost forgot on the subject of shelf tools I think that Miguel's great
Gun System otl should be a part of the FX Shelf Tools.
my 2 cents

well I'm on linux, and I'm using the system monitor
which is the same as the task manager. I'm watching the Resources tab
on my system but on windows it is the Performance tab. they both graph processor usage.

yes it would seem so
when running simulation playback I get both procs working but it kind of interesting that they seem to swap percentages from one proc to another each time it plays.
Mantra uses 100 of both processors if its needed, you will find a lot of the time mantra will not always peg the 100 percent mark unless you are kinda serious about your render.

Not sure exactly of your workflow but…
If you do this from the “viewer” ie hover over the viewer pane and do these operations it should work.
It will put things where they go as it were.
If you use the icons on the shelf Houdini will build the networks you need for you.
I don't even have a copy icon on my shelves…
If you want to work in the network , you would first create a Geometery node then jump inside of that create your box and grid
and then copy one to the other.

Well done MichaelC
Hats off to you for explaining it. Thats it exactly.
What you said is basically what I was driving at by saying “Houdini has an atomic approach to things”, and “think of it as an Operating System for 3D”.
You have so much core level control over things that it is not easy to say
….to make X do Y like so! …because you can do X a bunch of different ways.
Studying others files is an absolute must. You can actually “see” what the other person was thinking when they were building the file.
I did exactly the same as you, I would pick a project and just say I'm doing this in Houdini and stick to it until its done. You also develop a keen eye for
ongoing and new threads for anything that sounds like what you are doing in your project, and nine out of ten you find a little gem of info that helps you. (Your mileage may differ)
I do feel for any new user though, as it seems to be a daunting task,
when you have all these quick push button solutions around. The trouble is they might be quick but they don't foster any ability on the part of the artist. If you take a little more time up front to really learn, then later when any problem comes along, your ready for it, and your fast at it.
give a man a fish and you feed him today, but give him a fishing pole
and you feed him for life.
whooo … waxing a little too philosophical there.
I'll stop now.

There is beginning interface/workflow up to some more sticky stuff, and thats just on the sesi site.
You are correct about much of it being spread all over the place, however just on this site alone there is enough to get you going a long way
towards actual productive use.
I think Sesi has gone a long way towards getting materials out to the public
and will continue to do so. I for one applaud them for it.
The legacy stuff from six is still pretty useful if your new but 9 is a big change in workflow.
Thing is,… is that Houdini is very atomic, and that base level kind of workflow is ( once groked ) is applicable all over the place. I once told someone I actually learned more about 3D in general , and my usual apps (XSI, Maya), because I was learning Houdini.
Think of Houdini as an operating system for 3D.

I am always surprised how many times I see “ there aren't any tuts for Houdini, where can I get information?”
That was kinda the case back during V5, but after that tuts came out from everywhere. (even then there were a lot of PDF tuts.)
It seems to me it's all over , but I'm really looking I guess.
It's not to the saturation point of say Maya or somesuch but still,… currently there are a boatload of videos and tuts available, not only from Sidefx, but from odforce, 3dbuzz, and the community at large (if you checked the users web pages), and now Digital tutors.
Great time for learning Houdini.

try odforce
there are a ton of resources there
in particular

and
http://odforce.net/downloads/videos/v6/ [odforce.net]
the latter being old Ver 6 tuts but will help you get up to speed,
most everything should still work.

probably the best thing is to do is rollback a couple of versions on you graphics drivers. I have solved this issues with a couple of different packages by doing this.

I also meant to say that the deep shadows that you see in
the tutorials on Miguels site add quite a bit to the look, this is
much more difficult to do in other packages.
In Houdini is is pretty straight forward.
