cpbThanks for the reply. It seems to be doing what I was asking although the shells in one cluster don't have exactly same vertex count which is probably a matter of tweaking parameters? I wish there was an easier way to do it as the clustering attribute vop seems quite complex. Isn't there a way to do the clustering with the built-in cluster node?
see attached,
using partition sop to grab the segment attribute.

Technical Discussion » Feature request | Smooth guide modifier on Guide Groom

The current Smooth operation on the Guide Groom node works quite differently than how I'd expect it to work as it averages surrounding guides to shape the guide. This makes it hard to smooth a guide itself independent of other guides which is something that usually happens when grooming long hairs. Is it possible to add a per-guide smoothing operation as a modifier, for example by holding shift + LMB, the brush switches to smoothing mode. Shift + RMB can still be used to change brush size (or vice versa).

bonsakThanks for the reply. I was hoping to use the masking on the Guide Groom node itself so that it works with its grooming brushes (e.g. screen brush). If I use a Guide Process, how do I pipe the mask to the Guide Groom?
On a Guide Process node, go to the Masking tab and check Use Curve Mask.
You can also define your own “mask” attributes on the guides and pipe them in via the Blend dropdown.

Bonsak

Is it possible to add a ramp masking option to the Guide Groom node so that we can groom hair tips and roots without affecting each other? This is equivalent to the Fibermesh masking in ZBrush.
Thanks

Is it possible to move around drawn hair guides while making sure their root are sliding on the surface? This should ideally be possible on the Guide Draw node itself; otherwise it can make quite a busy graph. I can select and transform guides but that's detaching the root from surface which is useless.
On a side note, even though the skin group is specified, Guide Draw still draws guides on other groups that were not specified. Is that an expected behavior?
Thanks

mestelaThanks for the tips. I think I'm gonna stick with the force parameter for now. I'm quite new to Houdini, so it would take some time until i can figure out how to do the display/render separations myself.
You could do it in several ways. Leave the render hair hidden, but use the force objects parameter in your rop to only turn it on at render time. Or if you're using a sops hair workflow rather than the high level obj system created by the shelf tools, you can split your display (blue) and render (purple) flags in sops to do a similar trick.

Yeah, I was doing that in the interim, however it would be pretty handy to be able to do this without having to create unnecessary nodes.

Often times it may be needed to reorder operations on a guide process, for example I have Set Length guide process in “set” mode and later I decide to add another operation in “multiply” mode, but now the “set” operation somewhat overrides the “multiply”, while I want the “multiply” one to function over the “set” one. I assume for this to work, their order has to get swapped. So, Is it possible to reorder the operations?
Thanks

Is it possible to control viewport and render density ratio on Hair Generate? This ability is quite imperative to have.
Technical Discussion » Manage Groom Merge groups inside Hair Generate

Hi,
I have multiple Guide Grooms that are merged with Groom Merge node (Create Groups is on). This node is plugged to a single Hair Generate. Inside the Hair Generate I want to manage each guide group differently, for example a clump node that only affects a certain group. Is there a way to do that at all? Is it even possible to access the guide groups made by Groom Merge inside Hair Generate?
I'm quite new to Houdini so I'm still figuring things out. If that's not possible, I guess the only way is to add a Hair Generate for each Guide Groom, right?
Thanks

McNistorThat was it! Thanks for the tip!
Guides have to be selected with the small arrow next to “Primitive Group” in your guide groom node, not with the normal viewport select.

I have the same question! Is there a way to comb individual guides/hairs?
I read in another thread by selecting them, it's possible to do so but it just does not work!
