Why does the blue boundary frame in the UV viewer not display consistently?
Sometimes it shows up, sometimes not.

Yes that would work, but I want it specific to a hip file.
So, I've set it up like this, at least for my environment.
For the OnLoad event in the otl.
unix firefox http://www.sidefx.com [sidefx.com] &
I suppose I'll having to figure out how to search for the default browser.
This though means I can launch a hip file and have it open a browser to a specific URL.
You guys were a great help, thanks.

Thanks Peter,
It's a great solution but looks like a bit too primitive for what I'm really after. In this case I've just been writing out loud on an idea for having a preliminary explanation popup when a student loads a file.
Likely what I'm after is to have another application launch that would display a page that is a bit prettier than just plain text.
While it may seem a bit over-complicated I think there is value in having an “introductory” bit of information popup automatically.

You guys are awesome!! Thanks.
I went with Ben's idea since it provides more space to write stuff.
Since I don't hscript all that much, how do I create new lines in the textport?
I know about “\n” to provide a carriage return in the popup window.
Anyway around the message holding the Houdini launch until the popup window is clear?

In the ongoing saga of the memory leak, it indeed seemed to be specific to Ubuntu rather than Houdini.
The latest update to the Dbus interprocess messaging system, seems to have calmed the problem significantly. It's not quite back to what I would like to see, but at least the cache isn't filling to the brim
I'm finding this somewhat facinating so will keep you posted till I get bored.

Is there a way to set a comment window to popup automatically when a hip file is first loaded?
With my tutorials I'd like to have initial comments pop-up when a hip file is loaded.

The size of the display of the arrow indicating the direction of selection seems to be sensitive to which axis, or plane, you are viewing along.
If you are flat to the X,Z plane the arrow all but disappears, as you rotate to point more towards the Y axis the arrow progressively gets bigger. To the point where it can obscure the selection.
Ubuntu 6.06, nvidia graphics, Houdini 8.1.822

Yes, more details please.
I get strange renders from the compositor sometimes but never had a problem with z-depth in Mantra.
I'm using Ubunut 6.06 and nvidia drivers.

FYI, a follow-up on this topic. After doing some more digging it appears that the memory problem is something in Ubuntu 6.06, specifically the latest update to the kernel. I'm slowly pursuing this, but it will ultimately depend on Ubuntu generating another update.

I'm rendering in Houdini 8.1.802 and I seem to have a memory leak, or some such beast, when rendering with Mantra.
The render uses ram, obviously, but doesn't seem to want to release it when the render is done.
I'm not doing anything special with the rendering, mostly defaults, although I changed the bucks to 32.
In order to clear the memory I need to restart Houdini.

A Shuttle P2700 with 8 gigs of ram, Ubuntu 6.06 and Qemu.
That's a setup.
Qemu will allow you to simply establish and run any other OS you simply must use. I'm very impressed with it, accept the networking component is a bit convoluted to get running.

Aarggh! I've no dignity left, is this the end of my PPC 64bit relationship? Not in respect of editing with Final Cut Studio and Shake. Or other 3D Apps, like Lightwave, C4D, Maya, as well as there in shakable partner Photoshop!
Is this really an end of an era! Even thought of the unthinkable “if that's a word no red line under score though”! Buying a PC. Errrahahagh the pain! Still a mac power book with an intel chip cools the noodle. What one ought I to buy any recommendations with an ubuntu O.S.?

Can someone explain the unload option at sop level.
I'm trying it in Houdini 8.0.342 and it seems to be doing the opposite
of what I'm expecting it to, namely speed up the network.

Another option for getting your bevelled edge on text is to use an extrude sop.
Pipe your font sop into the extrude and then generate a curve for your bevel profile and pipe that into the right-hand input of the extrude. The curve will be the cross-section that defines the extrude shape. This will give you great control over your bevel profile.

Your right, if you do the same experiment viewing through a camera it does something else.
The camera zooms in and out depending on when you switch between world and sop space. The zoom accumulates as well.
I'm not so much trouble by that stuff, what's trouble is that the construction plane doesn't reset to the “new” 0,0,0

This maybe a bit hard to explain and I'm just looking to understand something here.
I use a default geo object with the box, put a sin expression in TY and run the animation.
I then go to the geo sop space where I see the box moving up and down, because the world space view flag is on. I have the construction plane viewable.
Here's the tricky part, if I turn off the world space view the box stops, obviously because there is no translation happening in sop space, if I turn on world view again the box resumes animation but depending on when I do this the world origin has changes position.
If I continue turning on and off world space view, if I time it right, I can have the box accumulate a TY location relative to the construction plane.
The part that is troubling is that the construction plane doesn't reset to the new 0,0,0 location of the box's origin if I turn the view off and on.
This doesn't make sense to me.
Hopefully my description is clear and someone can explain this to me.

I agree John, but what else is there? If the original channels are kept then with any type of
complex network you get a nightmare list of redundant channels.
