The reason is most likely due to the amount of Cache Memory on the DOP Network Object. As the simulation cache increases and hits the limit, Houdini will start to write to disk thus causing the stuttering as it has to read from disk instead of memory.
You can try to increase the Cache Memory to 1000MB to see if it helps. Of course, this might slow your system down if you don't have enough RAM.
Hope that helps!
Cheers!

Technical Discussion » maximum channel value (in chops)

Hi,
I believe the two functions you're looking for are:
/ -> exhelp icmin
float icmin (float input_index, float channel_index)
Evaluates a CHOP's input channel's minimum value.
EXAMPLES
| icmin(0, 2)
|
RELATED
ics

/ -> exhelp icmax
float icmax (float input_index, float channel_index)
Evaluates a CHOP's input channel's maximum value.

For every channel, you'll replace the channel index with $C so for example, you'll put the following in the From Range parameters of the Math CHOP:
icmin(0,$C) , icmax(0,$C)
Hope the above helps!
Cheers!

Hi,
I strongly recommend you check out the Introduction to Fluid Dynamics in Houdini [sidefx.com] tutorial.
The last five videos focus on particle fluids and should give you a better understand of using particle fluids to create what you want.
Also, you can go to the Learning menu above & check out the Learning Roadmap.
Cheers!

Hi,
When it comes to Houdini, OpenGL support is crucial and currently, Nvidia drivers have better OpenGL support compared to ATI's.
We all hope ATI will improve OpenGL support in the near future but as it stands, Nvidia is a safer bet.
Cheers!

Hi,
First of all, welcome to the forums! It would help greatly if you post more details about the Houdini version, OS & graphics card you're using.
If you're using Windows Vista, please search the forum for HOUDINI_DISABLE_CONSOLE and read through the threads.
Cheers!

Sometime the latest & greatest graphics drivers are not the best. Did you turn on Antialiasing & Anisotropic settings on the graphics card? Houdini doesn't use anything of those. You should set it to “Application controlled” in the Nvidia Control Panel. You can also try to use a software profile like XSI or Maya to see if it helps.
To test if it's graphics card related, you can run Houdini with software OpenGL to see if it runs better. You just need to edit your houdini.env file in your $HOME/houdini10.0 directory with the following:
#
# Houdini Environment Settings
#
# The contents of this file are read into the environment
# at startup. They will override any existing entries in
# the environment.
#
# The syntax is one entry per line as follows:
# VAR = VALUE
#
# Values may be quoted
# VAR = “VALUE”
#
# Values may be empty
# VAR =
#
# Example:
#
# HOUDINI_NO_SPLASH = 1
HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE = 1
Please let us know how it goes.
Cheers!

You can also use a Font SOP to print out the values for you. Just put the following into the Font SOP:
`stamp(“../your_copy_sop”,“stamp_var”,0)`

djmikeHi,
I am experiencing the same issue as Wafflemao; the UI is absent when Houdini loads. I too am a first time Houdini user. I downloaded the Apprentice edition to get a feel for Houdini and it's capabilities. I was all stoked to get started, too. I won't upload a screenshot because it is the same as in Wafflemao's post.
My computer specs:
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit
Processor: Intel Q6600
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD3850 (with the latest drivers)
RAM: 4GB
You should check out this thread [sidefx.com] with regards to using an ATI card to see if it helps.
