Make sure you are not running the Houdini Launcher while you attempt to install. If the Houdini Launcher is not running and you still encounter an error, try closing all open programs and disabling your antivirus software (if any) before attempting to install again.

If Houdini is crashing shortly after you open it, make sure your system meets the System Requirements [www.sidefx.com]. In particular, I would make sure your graphics card and graphics driver are supported, although insufficient RAM might also cause crashes.

If you do lose the machine on which the licenses were installed, it is possible to recover them. See www.sidefx.com/faq/question/58/. The process is more difficult than returning the license from the machine on which it was installed.

A quick search shows that the Q9550 is over 10 years old. Houdini 17.0 requires SSE 4.2 instructions, and it seems like your CPU is too old to have SSE 4.2. If the error message during installation says “Your CPU does not appear to support SSE 4.2.”, then your CPU is too old to run Houdini 17.0.
You may be able to install an older version of Houdini (e.g. Houdini 16.5) on your machine. However, 4GB RAM and 4 CPU cores at 2.83 GHz means that it will be slow, and may be unable to process more complex scenes.

Yes, you can run older versions of Houdini with newer licenses: www.sidefx.com/faq/licensing-trouble/#faq235
Here is what you can do: Install Houdini 17, making sure to leave Houdini 16.5 installed. You should upgrade your license server (choose the “Commercial License” option in the installer), but you do not need to if your current license server (sesinetd) is version 16.5. Once you have installed Houdini 17, run the license administrator and install your Houdini 17 license(s). Then you can run both Houdini 16.5 and Houdini 17.

Are you on Linux? On Linux, the middle mouse button will paste the text most recently highlighted. This is a separate mechanism than the “standard” cut/copy/paste, often ctrl-x, c and v.

No, you cannot. One important thing the installer does is install the HoudiniServer service. Without this, Houdini is unable to check out a license. For more explanation of what HoudiniServer (also called hserver) does, see www.sidefx.com/faq/license-management/#faq6. In addition, depending on what type of license you have, you may need to install the license server and licenses.

It sounds like something is wrong with your license server. You mention your Mac Air is “fairly old”. You should make sure it meets the minimum system requirements [www.sidefx.com]. If it does, try re-installing Houdini 16.5.378. If you still get the same error, contact SideFX support and send them a description of what you have tried, and a license diagnostic (open the License Administrator, then choose View > Diagnostic Information).

The ATI Radeon HD 5770 is a really old graphics card (and 1GB VRAM is not enough to run Houdini). We recommend a graphics card with at least 2GB VRAM. See https://www.sidefx.com/Support/system-requirements/ [www.sidefx.com] for full requirements.
Technical Discussion » License server not starting after a system restart in Fedora 26

I don't use Fedora myself, but I think the problem is related to how services are installed. The short version is that our installer script assumes a “System V init” style of service installation (it installs a script called sesinetd in /etc/init.d, and creates symlinks in /etc/rc*.d to start/stop the service. It looks like Fedora uses systemd as its init program. I thought systemd would still use init scripts, even though its native format is something different.
If the old init scripts aren't working on your system, you'll have to do some research to figure out why systemd isn't reading the init scripts. You may have to translate the init scripts to whatever form systemd is expecting.

What version of Houdini are you trying to install? I just tried with Houdini 16.5.268, and it correctly installs both hserver and sesinetd. It's possible that the installer you have is corrupted. Try downloading a new installer and see if it has the same problem.

Indie licenses are node-locked, meaning one Indie license can only be installed on one computer. If you want to use Indie on two computers, you will need to buy two licenses.

The installer reports it could not find the NFS daemon because it looks for the paths /etc/init.d/nfs or /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server. If it can't find either, it assumes the NFS daemon is not installed. From what I can tell, it looks like Fedora uses systemd. It also looks like the nfs-utils package doesn't install an init script in /etc/init.d. I've filed a bug for our HQueue installer to not rely on init.d. As a workaround, you can install HQueue if you choose “NO” when asked to create a shared folder (note that you'll have to set up the shared folder yourself). You may also need to choose to manually set up the shared folder when installing HQueue Clients, too.

Did you install the license server? (Commercial Licensing option in the installer)
To install a paid-for license, you need to do the following:
1. Install Houdini with the Commercial Licensing option enabled. You can't use Apprentice License mode.
2. Run the Houdini License Administrator (hkey)
3. In hkey, choose “Install Licenses”. Make sure to log in with your license account (which may not be your forum login)
4. Make sure you're launching Houdini using the right shortcut (e.g. run hindie.exe for Indie).

As far as I know, there is no Houdini documentation about automated deployment. Automatically deploying software to many machines is not something I am very knowledgeable about. SideFX support may be able to help you more.
