the 12gb is low at least 32gb for ig sims. what can help is to run it on linux because the ram usage is lower (i think up to 30%).

i don't think that will work with that engine….
but maybe the best way is to make a custom js script in the goo engine that can use the export option json file format from houdini. but that will be not a small task….
btw: i don't know if the bones system will be exported….

it looks like the collision area is to thin for the collision you have to change the settings or the terrain mesh has no depth.
look in to the file.

i haven't used a lot alembic but maybe you have to use the instancer insteat of the copysop. sadly i can't test it at the moment.

Anything similar on a per material basis? Shop_Id?
you can do it manually.
add to the shop networks (each shader must be modified) a bind export give it a name this case: Shop_Id set a value or export the parameter.
make in mantra a new image plane with the Shop_Id and hit render.

in short: when you learn it you will know what you have missed. :-)
i can't say you have to learn it because of function X Y Z you have to invest the time. the question is more where do you want to be in 5 years is your target the current job position or do you want to be a team leader or even a higher position. when you want to be a expert in 3d you must learn houdini to know whats going under the hood of the software and more software you know more positions are open for you.
the expression is mostly linking values. that means RMB -> Copy Parameter and RMB -> Past Copied ….. it's sounds worse but it's easy…..
what i do is to use VEX where i can and there you have a node system and code.

in houdini you have nearly everything there are a lot of functions build in. it's easier to say whats missing :-)
- - digital sculpting ala zbrush or 3dcoat
- image and vector painting like photoshop, gimp, illustrator, inkscape
- 3d tracker
- nle video editor
- colorgrading system like nucoda, davinci, mistika (basic colorgrading exists)

it could be this:
- vel is too high for the particle solver (try add substeps)
- terrain collition surface is to low or friction….
i'm not the old school master jeff so it's hard to analyse just from a pic. :-)
