Okay, that's going to be a blocker for what I want to achieve. I will log an RFE as it might be simpler/quicker to add, than getting the individual BSDFs supported in XPU.
It's the same blocking feature.

The template flag can show more than one thing without 'merging' them. Change display options for template geometry to render normally instead of ghosted if desired.

Technical Discussion » How to light a model without 3D shading?

For no lighting, use a constant shader (emissive). This will skip any light and shadow calculations, letting the texture set the on screen color directly.

x, y, z components of v are theta phi and radius of polar coordinates, distributed such that a uniformly distributed cartesian coordinate system in the range of 0-1 will be uniformly distributed in a sphere interior.

Can you illustrate with a screenshot? Because I didn't see it before and just checked again and not there....
Using Houdini 19.0.657
sure, it's on the Render tab.

Yes, if you select the nodes in the network editor, the display as option is one of the parameters.

The author of 'table import' needs to fix the code to close the file.
Edit:
I guess that's a sidefx node. Submit a bug.

Solaris and Karma » How to get Tangent Normal AOV with Karma ?
- jsmack
- 7770 posts

Oh, you want to bake it down to a card, so the tangent normal is relative to a plane normal. You should just be able to refit the world space normal with respect to the desired plane. This could probably be done in post using composite operations.

Hey,
All is in the title, I can't find an AOV to get a tangent normal map in karma, I get only a World Space.
Any idea to get a tangent, by a shader trick or something?Image Not Found
Any help will be very appreciated i'm totally stuck on this !
Thanks and have a good day
(PS : I also posted in Technical Discussion, before realise there was a specific channel, if a modo can delete it, sorry!)
I'm not aware of a built in tangent normal output. If you have normal maps, you could add a karma aov node to export the texture value before it's passed to the tangent normal node.

bgeo files are a native geometry format that can be loaded quickly into memory. Importing onto the stage requires converting to USD format. It's pretty fast, but if you have a lot of attributes it can slow down. The importer won't know whether the topology is static and which attributes are unchanging. configuring the import with hints as to which attributes are changing, whether or not the topology is static, and which attributes to import can massively improve performance. With a scene import, the configuration has to be done in SOPs using the USDConfigure SOP. The sopimport node in Solaris has a similar set of controls but doesn't import object hierarchies or lights and cameras.

These are HDALC which makes them not usable in commercial projects, FYI
I'm not trying to be spiteful, @jsmack, but Indie files can be used in commercial projects, FYI.
I'm aware that "Indie" is for commercial use, but there isn't any other way to distinguish a non-indie license. Commercial in this sense means the regular version of Houdini.
ajz3d
I'm saying all that, because I am oversensitive to situations in which someone spends his time on something useful for the community, and is publishing it not only free of charge, but also as an open asset which we can study, and yet there is always someone who complains about this in one way or another. I'm sorry, but I've seen it way too many times in libre software to let it pass without a comment.
Not a complaint at all. I'm grateful for those that publish their work for others.
I mean to give a warning that the nodes can't be used in the full commercial version of Houdini as they will convert the session to an indie one, possibly resulting in hours of lost work as the resulting indie hip file cannot be used in a full session.
If anything, this is a complaint against sidefx. The license structure creates a divide between classes of users, and prevents open source collaboration that would otherwise be possible with a more permissive license.

Labs has an excellent SOP called physical_ambient_occlusion, I have been playing with it and I've found that if I use it on the wheels of my car and with a small grid with high poly count, merged with the wheels, set the grid to use a MaterialX material which has a mtlxgeompropvalue node to take the mask attribute from the SOP, I can use it to drive the transparency of the grid to give Ambient Occlusion under the tyres making the rest of the grid transparent.
I am also looking for a way to get the same from the shadows, is there a shadow SOP like the Labs physical_ambient_occlusion node?
There's "mask by feature", which can calculate shadows using a pointcloud as point light sources or a vector as a directional light source. It can also do ambient occlusion in the same node.

That's a really weird behavior, if you ask me. Where exactly does Houdini store information about shelves loaded by the program and added to the dock? How is it possible that it remembers what shelves were loaded even though I haven't saved the scene or saved changes done to the current desktop preset?
Modifying your shelves saves it to your user prefs default.shelf. I'd highly recommend against trying to script shelves. It removes user agency by writing over their personal preferences without consent.

does it still happen if you close the csv file when you're done reading it, or use a "with" block in python when opening the file?

So the question is...
- should XPU behave like CPU and allow albedo/basecolor to go above 1.0?
- or stay the way it is
It seems XPU should allow it to go above 1.0 given its a feature some people make use of now and then?
The classic shader had the old 'conserve energy' toggle. Maybe something like that could be exposed somewhere?
