Further to this …
If in the pythonrc.py file, I have the line
import os
my understanding is that it imports the os module into Houdini.
However, when I run another module that uses os, do I need to put the import os statement in that other file?

If I am using pythonrc.py & 456.py files, when does the hou module get imported in relationship to these?
I know that pythonrc.py loads before 456.py.

Houdini Apprentice HD 9.5.274
Not sure if this is a bug or not …
When I exit from the Render Region tool (let's say clicking on Select tool), I get primitive normals displayed on my object in the viewport. And I can't get rid of them!
I've looked in the Display Options but they're not turned on. They will turn off if I go to another tool like Move and select the object. But the minute I stop using that tool, the normals return. If I save/quit/reload they're gone.
Am I missing something really obvious? Thanks in advance.

It should be here.

Aha … you're right. Thanks (strange the search in Windows didn't find it).

Hey Steven,
I'm using H9.5.230 Apprentice HD on a Vista64. The online help says the examples are located in $HFS/mozilla/documents/hom/cookbook but that directory is nowhere to be found.
Does Apprentice HD come with the cookbook? SESI?
Anyways, I went to the link you provided and downloaded the tar file. I guess I need to manually install it and go from there.
Thanks,
Rob

I get the same result. Maybe I haven't had enough coffee but, what happens to a point when it dies … is it removed completely? It seems so when looking at info during the sim.
That said, how does the “dead” point ever reach the group POP to make use of the expression $DEAD == 1 if it's removed? This would explain the reason why the dead group is always 0 points.
Or maybe it's a bug :?

Is the HOM cookbook distributed with Houdini now? I cannot find it with the Apprentice HD version.
It is noted in the Help (http://localhost:48626/hom/cookbook/). [localhost]

Houdini Lounge » CHOPs to SOPs

edwardI am trying to drive colour values of a Color SOP using a basic chopnet.
You can't use the Color SOP because it doesn't support local variables. In order, to use CHOPs to drive SOP attributes, you need to be able to index into a different frame of the CHOP per point. So you can use the Point SOP which gives you access to the $PT local variable along with the chopf() expression to obtain the color values from the chop network.
A far better way though is to use the Channel SOP. I've included both methods in the attached file.
Maybe I missed something in the original query but you can still have the Color SOP driven by a chop network, no?

1) In houdini interface color settings set gamma to some value different from 1 (i set 0.95)
2) Create some objects and network box around it. Then change network box's color.
3) Click on network box's header and you see that it change color to darker and darker.

Yep … I can confirm this too. If you toggle between minimize/maximize network box, it will change colour too.

Hi
I am trying to drive colour values of a Color SOP using a basic chopnet. I can get CHOPs to drive attributes at the OBJ level but not drive anything within the Geo node or below. I have tried to do it the other way using ch() but can't get that to work either.
Are you using an export chop? If so, make sure to toggle on the export flag. In the export chop make sure the path is set to the node you want to override and the path is the name of the attribute.
cheers,
Rob

hmmm, ok .. now I have more questions than before :?. Would those who have purchased it summarize it as a features overview; or a “how to use in production” guide; or somewhere inbetween.
I thought it was well done and would recommend it to anyone. For those just starting out, it can easily be followed. And for us with a bit more experience, you may pick up a tip or two (I found the PBR & GI lessons useful).
Definitely not a hit-you-over-the-head demo of Houdini features. The exposure to the features comes out of the lessons. The entire tutorial falls somewhere inbetween “feature-based” and “how-to” … favouring the latter.
My 2 cents,
Rob

Could this be one of those cases where you need to make sure the expression language for the node is set to python?

Hi,
I would like to anamorph a video (the extension is .mov) from 4:3 to cinescope 2.35:1 (like tarantino's movies). is it possible by houdini? If yes, how do?
sorry for my bad english but i'm italian and i don't write it very well…..
thanks
bye by FIL
First, Houdini cannot handle Quicktime movies (.mov). You may need to purchase Quicktime Pro from Apple. It will allow you to save the .mov file to various other formats.
What is the resolution of your source file? What resolution do you want it to be? When you export you can customize the size and I believe there is something there for aspect ratio (maybe letterbox it?).
If you really wanted to use Houdini, use QT Pro to save an image sequence thru it's export options (you can save to jpeg, tga, bmp). Then load this sequence in COPs and do your own cropping.
Good luck.

If it helps, I'm using a Nvidia 8600M GS card with Houdini … seems to run pretty well. The laptop is HP Pavilion dv9700 with Duo Core, 2.1GHz with 4GB RAM.
As for your choice between Dell & Mac, I'd go with the former. I still have a 6 year old one and it's been solid. Macs are nice & stylish but seem a bit pricey.
My two cents. Good luck with your decision.

Not exactly sure what problem you're having with the edit SOP. I'm able to move the lines & points around in your example file.
Could you be more specific at what you're struggling with?

Using COPs, let's say I have a series of images rendered from 100-1000. I want to blur frames 100-200 using the fit expression ( fit($F,100,200,0,5) ) … then repeat the same process on frames 350-450, 600-700.
I want to avoid having to chop this into chunks of frame ranges. Is there a COP that can do this? I'm sure there's an easy way of doing this
Thanks in advance,
Rob

hasprim is an Hscript Expression function and your node language is set to use Python, which is why it says it's not defined when you remove the quotes. Right now, with the quotes, it's returning that string expression which is useless in the context of the parm and returning 0. Either changing the expression/node to Hscript, or wrapping it in a hou.hscriptExpression() should make it work.
Thanks graham, that was the problem.
