I've noticed that you can make a hip file with an old version of houdini and either open it with a new version or copy and paste the shader node from one file to the other…
It's janky, but it works.

i don't understand how to color a volume before a volumemix/merge node. I want to use volumes for curvy modeling, but i like to be able to color parts. a regular color node doesn't work. how do i do this? thanks!

Ok, i kinda figured that. It's ok this is working great for me.
I do wonder if there is some way to edit the colormap after it has been baked and then see the updates in realtime in the viewport…

thank you so much, this will be super useful for what i'm doing…!
in general, i want to move stuff to unity so texture maps are key in video games. i can't just have a different material for every different color.

oh yeah and there is an error in the polyextrude because of the way 12.5 calculates primitive numbers (or something like that)

there are the “first steps” videos here on sidefx.
“houdini fundamentals” is pretty good on cmi
also, I like “The Magic of Houdini” (book) …although it is getting kind of old. you can still work through it, and there is a lot of good stuff in there.

mmkay, what I would reeeeally like to do is take the colors on this guy and make a texture map of them… preferably one that automatically lines up with default uvs (like from a uvunwrap).
This seems like it should be easy to do, but i haven't found much.
I know someone can help, please?

ok, well that does work better… Whenever i made “bones from curve” it wouldn't let me selected anything but “no kinematics” or “follow curve”, so I thought you just couldn't do inverse kinematics, i guess…
I did like the motion from no kinematics, but whenever i made that linear handle, it was slightly affecting the rx ry and rz for each of the 10 bones in different propotions…
I just couldn't figure out a good way to control that.
Thanks for showing me how to add an IK goal, though. that's helpful.

I made some bones from a curve…
It wouldn't let me make them IK bones cuz they were from a curve…
So I selected all the bones and made a persistent handle…
Now i want to use an expression on that handle…
alas, I see no parameter box in which to type the expression…
any ideas?

Next steps module 1 was great! I noticed that i was thinking more procedurally just from watching it! I realized that i haven't nearly been using the switch sop enough. Ari is an excellent instructor.
One thing that i am wondering is, will there be any information made available on writing an output driver to interface with a game engine? It is not really clear to me how to get color attributes, normals, uvs, etc… exported properly.

Sometimes your viewport settings might not be compatible with your graphics card. I think its edit->preferences->viewports try changing the little dropdown menu where it says gl 3.2 to a different setting and see if that is helpful.

Hi, i just got a camera that takes 3d images in an mpo format. I can extract the jpg stereo files, and i am wondering how i might go about constructing a mesh from them. Any ideas?

i was wondering if anybody uses or has used the voice sync CHOP? it looks like it might be pretty powerful, but there seems to be very little information on it… I found a PDF file from 1999, but I couldn't find any of the example files to go with it.
Is this anything that's worth pursuing? If I understand correctly, you can set up poses for Visemes and feed in a Phoneme library in an audio file and Houdini will make your character talk.

I have a question about the attached hip file.
I can copy the shopnet1 node to a new file and it works pretty well, however, I don't seem to be able to drop down a toon node from the tab menu… even though there is already one inside the shopnet (this is in houdini 11.1 and also in 12.1)
also, i see a handful of other nodes in the help file which seem to not be available (soft toon, krinkle… a bunch of them…).
What am I missing here?

arghhh… yes, you are right. that book is rather dense, but it seems to be the definitive tome on the subject.
