Technical Discussion » easy way to animating many points positions?

This suggestion won't help if you want specific keying, but you could animate with an animated image and a vopsop displacement.

rodmenaprobbinsSure and thanks.
Can you send us your file so we can work in that context?
Move the transform below the vopsop.
Since you are using a vopsop you are directly influencing the point position of the geometry. With the transform above the vopsop your are changing the point positions (P) at each frame and your vopsop is re-calculating based on the changed P.

He's a handsome fellow.
Your scale must be very large to need a displacement value that big.
Have you tried the UVpelt sop for your uv'ing? Not that there is anything wrong with modo, it would just save moving to yet another software for a task.

Ironic, the movie was done with Houdini, by C.O.R.E.
No on the video, you need to convert it to a sequence of images.

There are no particles in voxel fluids, the voxels are simply recording vector and scalar values as they pass through.
You could take data out to sop space and generate particles there and influence the particles, however I don't think that's what you are after.
In the dops space you could add turbulence and the like to the voxel fluid but that's not going to be particularly directable.
Likely you will need to establish what you want on the source geometry before you bring it into dops.

Rather than using particles you could create a single curve and copy that to scattered points on a sphere. Then use stamp functions to vary the shape and length of each curve.

Not sure I can help either however, would it not be simpler to key out the black, treat the remainder as a layer and do an over operation with a new black layer of a specific size?
I would suppose you would have to computer the size of the remainder somehow and re-center it on the new black layer.

As does that Stephen guy. He had some good fluid tutorials….I think.
Stephen who? Didn't he disappear into some dark production room some place? hmmm….
ps. love you steve

Just one correction on your chops lessons, houdini does recognize mp3 files.

If you've successfully installed there should be a Side Effects Software entry in the Applicatons menu.
The way I do it though is to source houdini into a shell, then go to the directory where I wish to work and launch it from there on the commandline.
So, I install houdini in the /opt directory; then I go into the directory of the version I choose to use ie: hfs10.0.365.
This is using a bash shell, so in that directory I do
“ source houdini_setup_bash ”, without the quotes. This initializes this shell so that it will run houdini.
Then I go to my working directory and type, houdini
done.

Well houdini isn't an engineering tool, however companies are starting to use it for just this sort of simulation.
It provides a faithful representation of a fluid solution, and is excellent for rapid prototyping the setup you want to inject into your mainframe simulator.

I would think so, but you might also want to look at a particle system and the spring sop.

Go to your windows menu and launch Mplay by itself. Don't load a file when it askes, just cancel that. Under the Render menu of Mplay, turn on “Listen for Renderer”, then leave Mplay open.
In Houdini launch a render. If this works, then delete your Houdini preferences directory(under My Documents someplace) and launch houdini again and have it build a new default set of preferences.
